A Teen Guide to Reconnecting with Body, Mind, Food and Soul: Training Manual and PowerPoint CD
Curriculum for Middle and High School Students
Author: Beverly Price, RD, MA, RYT
In a study of students, by Lavik et al. (1991), there is an increased use of alcohol consumption and other substances in high school girls who are dieting. In addition, 33% of individuals that actually have eating disorders also tend to have behaviors that involve impulsiveness and sexual promiscuity. Therefore, this program dovetails with alcohol prevention and drug abuse education, violence prevention and HIV education.
- Learn about historical perspectives on current body image attitudes in this country
- Know the dangers of dieting
- Evaluate mass media messages and their influence on beliefs
- Practice nutrition and exercise routines for a lifetime of good health
- Practice problem solving skills and reaching out to someone that you suspect has an eating disorder
- Understand genetic family tree and its' role in shaping individuality
- Cultivate role models in developing healthy self-esteem and a healthy self-image
Information for parents is also included in both programs in order to educate parents as to the significance that their role has in shaping their child's attitudes about their bodies and eating habits. Parental involvement is of utmost importance in order to elicit support in putting these learned concepts into practice at home.
Review
The Teen Guide is a perfect tool to use if you are interested in teaching eating disorders awareness to young women. If you are trying to get a foot in the door at a local middle or high school, I would suggest this tool!
